Reading Difficulties
I've worked for many years as a primary school teacher, and also as an adviser in English to East Sussex Education Committee. I also have experience and qualifications in English as a second language.
On the media here is a lot of easy-fix talk about teaching reading. The thing to hang on to is that reading needs to be made interesting, something shared with mum or dad or of relatives or friends, and not turned into a chore, or a set of rules which you've got to grind away at. There is a place of rules, of course, but the basic thing is getting the young person to want to read.
